Miguel Cotto vs Joshua Clottey on 13 June 2009: A Fight for WBO Welterweight Title

Joshua Clottey is going to face WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto on 13 June 2009, aiming to clinch his second world title in his career. The Ghanaian achieved his first ever world title in August 2008 when he defeated Zab Judah to win the vacated IBF Welterweight title. Now, Clottey wants to gain WBO welterweight title, defeating Cotto who achieved the WBO welterweight title on 1 February 2009 as he pulled off a victory over Michael Jennings. Joshua Clottey has said that he is now working hard ahead of the fight against Cotto and wants to know more about the Puerto Rican boxer who formerly held WBO junior welterweight and WBA welterweight titled.

Both the boxers hold impressive career record. Cotto won 33 fights in which 27 were knock outs and lost only one fight which was against Antonio Margarito. With this defeat, Miguel Cotto lost the WBA welterweight title. Joshua Clottey has 35 victories including 20 knock outs in his career, besides 2 defeats in his professional boxing career. Cotto seems to be favorite in the fight, but given Clottey’s power and strength, I think, it is going to be hard-fought affair. Now, let us see if Miguel Cotto can successfully defend his WBO welterweight title against Joshua Clottey.

Miguel Cotto is one of the most influential fighters of welterweight division at this moment and he is now going to face Clottey in his bid to become the top rated welterweight fighter. Miguel Cotto is the three time world champion who earlier held WBO junior welterweight and WBA welterweight before winning the reigning WBO welterweight title, defeating Michael Jennings in a fifth-round knock out in February 2009. The Puerto Rican clinched his first ever world championship title in 2004 when he pulled off a knock out victory over undefeated Kelson Pinto to win the WBO junior welterweight title. He vacated the title after successfully defending it on six occasions in order to ascend to the welterweight division. Cotto then defeated Carlos Quintana to clinch his second career title, a WBA welterweight title, which he defended four times against Oktay Urkal, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley and Alfonso Gómez, but lost the title being defeated at the hands of Antonio Margarito, his only defeat in professional boxing career. Joshua Clottey won his IBF welterweight title in August 2009 by knock out Zab Judah. Clottey has been in excellent form now as he is heading into the fight against Cotto on a five-match winning run which includes victories over the like of Diego Corrales, two time former world champion, undefeated Shamone Alvarez and Felix Flores. With 35 wins including 21 knock outs, and 2 defeats, Joshua Clottey also holds a convincing professional record.

Unlike many other fighters, Cotto and Clottey have enough respect for each other. However, both the boxers are hopeful about their victory in the fight and seem to be very confident ahead of the bout.
