Wales Amateur Boxing Champion Physical Abused

Romeo Romaeo, a junior boxing champion from Wales, has been beaten up heavily in a park recently causing his hand broken. The boxer was practicing with his father, Tony, while was attacked in Jubilee Park, Leckwith, Cardiff. Following the incident, he was rushed to the hospital. The 12-years old Romeo Romaeo is currently the no. 1 schoolboy amateur boxing champion in Wales. He is supposed to represent Wales against Croatia next month.

Walesonline reported:

His mum Elaine, 35, said: “He was very shaken up and was crying afterwards.

“He’s still very sore and hasn’t been to school all week.

“We just hope that he’ll be better in time to box against Croatia.”

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed pending further inquiries.”

It is really an unexpected incident and it is not yet confirmed if he will be able to fit in time for the match against Croatia. I think police should go though the matter seriously and find out the person/s behind the incident.

Wayne McCullough Announced Retirement from Boxing

Wayne McCullough, the former world bantamweight champion, has announced his retirement from boxing following a defeat to Juan Ruiz in a NABF featherweight bout in Cayman Islands. With this bout against Juan Ruiz, McCullough came back to the ring since losing to Oscar Larios in WBC super bantamweight title fight in Las Vegas in 2005.

McCullough had a good start against American boxer Juan Ruiz as he was ahead on the scorecards of two of the three boxers after the end of six rounds and took the microphone to declare his retirement from boxing. Thanking all the spectators present in the fight, he said that it was his last fight and expressed that he had felt he could not go on. McCullough won world bantamweight championship title in 1995, two years after his appearance in a professional bout. The boxer defended his world bantamweight championship title twice- once against Johnny Bredahl and then against Jose Luis Bueno, before he lost it in 1997 due to weight difficulties and then being lost to Daniel Zaragoza on points in a WBC super bantamweight fight.

I do not know why McCullough did not continue against Juan Ruiz to clinch a victory in the last fight in his career. Anyway, I think, whatever he did in his illustrious career is enough to earn the respect from the boxing fans and players. I do not know whether should I call him a legend or just a star player, but one thing is for sure that the spirit and positive approach to the game he had throughout his career is something that young players can learn from.
